Introduction

What is a "Watershed?"

A watershed is an area of land that drains downhill through a network of ditches, streams, creeks, lakes, and wetlands to converge at the lowest point and form larger and larger rivers.  Watersheds include both surface water and groundwater and are also called "catch basins" or "drainage basins."

The largest river in the The Honey Creek Watershed is the Great Miami River.  All other streams within the watershed (e.g. Honey Creek, East and West Forks Honey Creek, Indian Creek, Pleasant Run, etc.) flow downhill to join the Great Miami River near Tipp City.

Why is it important to me?

The concept of a watershed dictates that we all live "downstream."   People who share a watershed have a responsibility to protect it for themselves and their neighbors.  Our watershed provides our drinking water, supports wildlife and fisheries, and is a vital component of our natural world.

The Honey Creek Watershed Association was formed in 2002 by a group of concerned citizens who wanted to preserve the health of our watershed for future generations.  The Honey Creek Watershed includes the headwaters, or starting point, of much of the water that flows into the Great Miami River, downstream to the Ohio River, the Mississippi River, and into the Gulf of Mexico!  The Association helps preserve the Watershed by protecting riparian lands, monitoring water quality to identify potential sources of pollution, and education residents about everything from proper septic system maintenance to landscaping with native vegetation.  Visit our Activities page to learn more!
